DISNEY HEROES
LEAD DESIGNER - MOBILE F2P
ChooseHeroes2.jpeg

My first foray into the mobile space was an exciting one as I not only got to learn new design perspectives, but also got to play in the Disney sandbox. As the Lead Designer on Disney Heroes I guided a team of four designers as we introduced multiple new modes, features and improved systems to be more evergreen.

I emphasized a data driven approach for many of our design decisions, which required us to have a tight relationship with our Business Intelligence group as well as engage in routine playtests and community feedback.

DESIGN CHALLENGES

Challenger Tier - Evergreen Multiplayer

The competitive PvP mode in our game had grown stale and needed a facelift. To that end, I designed a new Challenger Tier which aimed to achieve three key design goals: incorporate evergreen features to sustain player engagement, introduce competitive mechanics to heighten deck-building strategy, and celebrate player success in meaningful ways. To address these goals, we devised a seasonal structure with dynamic rulesets and a fresh reward system.

The seasonal format introduced a four-week cycle where players would ascend through seven divisions, each offering unique challenges such as stat or gear-based buffs and debuffs. To maintain novelty, the rules evolved each season, emphasizing variety and deck strategy. For example, higher divisions incorporated cumulative mechanics that created pressure on deck composition, ensuring no two seasons felt repetitive. We fostered competitive depth by implementing limited daily “Opponent Keys,” balancing player effort and reward. Ranking systems were also revamped with weekly resets to help maintain accessibility for new and returning players. To celebrate achievements, top players earned exclusive rewards like avatar borders and leaderboard recognition, creating tangible goals for progression.

By aligning these elements with engagement and retention metrics, the Challenger Tier became a sustainable, competitive environment that resonated with both our hardcore and casual players.

Yellow Rank - Hero Progression

In an effort to find a new way to enhance our monetization opportunities as well as address concerns around late-game engagement/retention, I helped to design a new "Yellow Rank" hero progression level that introduced a mechanic called Prime Badges. Each hero's Prime Badge offered buffs that progressively unlocked as heroes were promoted. Buffs activated dynamically in combat through unique triggers, creating strategic depth and rewarding player engagement. To support this system, an adjacent experience called “The Codebase” was introduced, where players face a mutating Mega Virus to earn “Megabits” for badge enhancements, fostering an engaging loop of skillful play and tangible rewards.

Aligned with business goals, the system added a scalable resource sink without disrupting free-to-play accessibility. Enhancement costs adjusted dynamically based on the player’s badge pool, ensuring fairness while challenging high spenders. Monetization was supported through targeted resource drops and incentivized engagement. Combined, these elements delivered a fresh progression layer that boosted retention and monetization metrics while balancing the player experience across our spending tiers.

Campaign 2.0

Our original Campaign mode was limited by a static structure, which constrained both thematic growth and content scalability. To address this, I led the effort to design a system that supported unlimited future expansion while maintaining thematic and narrative cohesion. Our initial approach involved prototyping procedurally generated maps with biome-based components and data-driven content crafted by design. However, during testing, we realized this solution fell short of our goals, prompting a strategic pivot.

Through collaboration across disciplines and departments, we refined a scalable approach that balanced procedural flexibility with curated player experiences. This iterative process involved exploring new methods to align content with player expectations while ensuring seamless integration into the existing framework. Ultimately, the new system enabled ongoing expansions without narrative disruption, providing the foundation for continuous updates and player engagement over time.
